Mike Peterson - From Dreams To Reality

Port Credit Boat Show seminar speaker Mike Petersen is part of The Store's Learn from the Experts Fall Seminar Series.  His seminar entitled "From Dreams to Reality" tells you how to take our dreams and turn them into a reality.

In this engaging and humorous seminar, Mike will encourage and inspire you to stop dreaming and start living. Mike's 6 year and still ongoing journey with his wife and two teenagers included building their 65' boat themselves, traveling the Eastern Seaboard, being the first Power Catamaran to transit the Atlantic, 2 years in the Med including the Suez and a brief jaunt into the Red Sea. Mike will share how they overcame their fear, a complete lack of boating experience (except for one week on a Carnival Cruise ship) and the relational issues of boating with teenagers.

Mike speaks Saturday, November 13 at The Store, Mason's Chandlery.  Sign up online.

Rob and Mary MacLeod at The Store - Mason's Chandlery

If you missed Rob and Mary MacLeod at the Port Credit In-Water Boat Show, don't worry, because they are part of this year's Learn From The Experts Fall Seminar Series at The Store - Mason's Chandlery.
Rob and Mary  (pictured here with Lori Mason of The Store - Mason's Chandlery) sailed their CS36 Sojourn down the ICW and spent 9 months in the Bahamas.  Rob was an experienced boater and cruiser, while Mary could best be described as a fair-weather sailor. Rob had a dream to sail to the Caribbean while Mary had reservations. Mary eventually said 'yes' to a year long cruise - but under certain conditions.  And that's their story, documented on their blog

Rob and Mary will give their presentation 'Living His Dream Under Her Terms' November 20 at 10AM. Listen to a frank discussion of what worked and what didn't and how Rob and Mary survived a year in small quarters, beat the cold, wet weather and arrived safe and sound on Lake Ontario.

Power AND Sailboats sold at the 20th Anniversary Port Credit Boat Show! Hosted by the Port Credit Harbour Marina and The Store, Mason's Chandlery August 27-29, the show saw great crowds and great boat buying weather. There were over 100 boats exhibited in-the-water and on the hard and over 40 land displays.

‘The show was a resounding success, we are absolutely delighted’, stated Lori Mason, owner of The Store, Mason’s Chandlery, one of the show sponors.  ‘From a brief survey, we were able to determine that more than 15 power and sail boats were sold at or as a direct result of the show. And these were both new and used boats.’
Anchor Yachts, dealer for Beneteau Yachts sold five boats at the show including a brand new Beneteau 37.  Shawn Bannon of Navy Point Yacht Sales sold a brand new Jeanneau 45DS 2010 that he had taken delivery of only two weeks prior to the show.

Don Hyde Marine reported sales on two powerboats as a direct result of the show, with good quality leads on other boats. Peter Solty of Crate Marine Sales Port Credit was absolutely delighted with the show.  “It was great. I sold 6 out of the 10 boats that I exhibited at the show, and 5 of those boats were sold to people that came to the show to buy.’

"It was a great show and very successful for us," stated Kevin Flynn of Yachttime. "We met a lot of new boaters exploring different options on how to enter into boating."  First time exhibitor Brian Chapman of UK-Halsey Sailmakers also had a successful weekend.  "We took 3 orders, with deposits, as well as many quote requests."

Bob Mitchell of Amphibious Boats said that the show 'exceeded his expectations'. His 6.1M recreational RIB, complete with wheels, received a lot of attention.

Mississauga Councillor and Acting Mayor Carmen Corbasson opened the show on Saturday at noon where she presented a cheque to Donna Scott of Ontario Sailing for $2,500, proceeds from the Charity Auction held in July at The Store.

A big hit was Tuggy the Safety Tugboat, sponsored by the OMOA, who charmed both young and seasoned boaters. The Speaker's Tent, a regular show feature, was packed to the rafters, featuring the seminars of Wally Moran, Rob and Mary MacLeod, Mike Peterson and Ken Gillstrom.

"We had a number of new exhibitors and new boats this year.  We also added a number of new features and made some changes that were reflected in the great comments we received from both attendees and exhibitors" said Mason.  "We've got some great ideas for next year and looking forward to an even better show in 2011!"

Mary eventually said 'yes' to a year long cruise - but under certain conditions.  And that's their story, documented on their blog

Rob and Mary will be telling their story at the 2010 Port Credit In-Water Boat Show, under the speaker's tent.  Listen to a frank discussion of what worked and what didn't and how Rob and Mary survived a year in small quarters, beat the cold, wet winter and arrived safe and sound back on Lake Ontario, only to continue living on their boat. Egyptian Cotton Towels For Sale At The Port Credit Boat Show

This year, purchase beautiful Egyptian cotton towels from CanEgy Import & Export, one of this year's new exhibitors at the Port Credit In-Water Boat Show.

According to Hazem of CanEgy, Egypt is King of the world cotton growers. The humid conditions combined with the rich soil  along the Nile River Valley create the perfect conditions to grow long cotton fibres - also known as staples. The long staple allows for more continous fibre used in creating threads or yarns.  While Egyptian yarn is smaller in diameter, it is stronger than other cottons.  Smaller yarn equals more threads per square inch creating a stronger fabric that is light weight and breathes well. Having a higher thread count means the fabric will be incredibly strong and will last for years.

Egyptian cotton towels are breathable, green friendly and are recommended for indoor and outdoor use. See Hazem's complete line of towels at CanEgy Import & Export | www.canegy.com

RIBCRAFT - Functionally Diverse - Rugged Performance

If you are looking for a high quality, reliable, rigid inflatable boat, then RIBCRAFT might be the choice for you.
Brand new to Canada, RIBCRAFT inflatables has established its position in the US as a designer and builder of high quality RIBS that will meet the needs of any boater.
Available with either a fiberglass or aluminum hull, the Hypalon tube is both puncture and UV resistant. Each of the five chambers within the tubing have their own pressure release valve to automatically adjust the pressure when the sun expands the Hypalon.
Because RIBCRAFT builds their boats one-at-a-time, they can personalize virtually any element of the design. You can customize your RIB with 'pod' or bench seating; towbars; radar arches - to name just a few options.
But it's the attention to detail that separates RIBCRAFT from other inflatable makers - including such detail as triple reinforced seams.
Designed originally built for the military and fire department use, they have been quickly adopted by yacht clubs for 'crash' or teaching boats.  Just recently RIBCRAFT has started to enter the 'consumer' market.
RIBCRAFT makes inflatables from 14-30 '.  They will be at the Port Credit Boat Show, showcasing the 6.5M.

SailTime - Fractional Boating - The Boat Club Of The Future

Want to go boating but can't afford the time and investment right now?  Then why not consider 'Fractional Boating' - shared ownership of a vessel - with the added bonus of 'club-like' privileges and events!

How does fractional boating work?
A boat is 'shared' by up to seven members and one 'Owner' member who are each guaranteed, but not restricted to, at least two boating weekends and five weekday or weeknight reservations every month.  Boat members design their own boating calendar and can commit to as little or as much time on the boat they want.

Do I have free access to my boat?
Once you become a member you are entitled to unlimited 'as-available' use on a 24-hour notice at no extra cost. You can also make instant boating reservations or plan up to a year in advance and can even request to swap sail times with other Members if the need arises.
And if you happen to miss a booked time in one month because of another planned event - no problem you can carry it over to the next month. In fact, you can borrow from a forward month for an extended cruise.  All this for one monthly flat fee. Boating just doesn't get any easier that this.

Is it a time share or is it a boat club?
It's both. SailTime GTA organizes all kinds of great activities including BBQs - a Special Ladies Night - and cruising events through - out the summer.

SailTime of Greater Toronto supports a fully loaded and professionally managed fleet: Cruisers 360, Hunter 36 and Hunter 33. They are celebrating 6 years on Lake Ontario, 3 years exhibiting at the Port Credit Boat Show.  They will be on hand in the grand tent to answer any or your questions.

Look Whose Going To Be At This Year's Show!

Humber Boats has confirmed that they are returning to the 2010 show  and will once again exhibit their 'eco-boat' the Humber Foton.  The Foton (pictured here) is the world's most economical solar powered boat and was a great hit at the 2009 show. Last year, John Rowley took several visitors out for boat tests in the inner harbour.

New to the show this year is The Winterizer, showcasing a brand new marine product that will simplify winterizing your power boat. Anything that reduces the amount of time we spend working on our boats is a good thing.  More time on the water.

Informedboater.com, sponsor of the speaker's tent will be announcing this year's roster at the beginning of June. Cruising and DIY seminars are planned, as well as Rob has a few surprise guests that will be dropping by.

DON'T MISS THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY! EXHIBIT AT THE PORT CREDIT BOAT SHOW.

Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Port Credit In-Water Boat Show continues to attract an ever increasing enthusiastic audience of seasoned and novice boaters.  If the results from last year are any indication of how our 20th anniversary will fare, then we can expect another sold out show and even more boating spectators.

Hosted at Port Credit Harbour Marina in Mississauga, ON, we are strategically located in the heart of Lake Ontario boat country, within 2 hours of South Western Ontario; Muskoka; Georgian Bay and the Newcastle area.  We are easily accessible by highway; public transit and water.

Show features include boat displays both in-the-water and on the hard; land displays of marine services; a seminar tent (featuring speakers on cruising; hands-on learning and safety); and a consignment tent, where boaters can bring their ‘old’ stuff and sell it!

The Port Credit Boat Show is just the right size for any boat buyer to see all the displays and board all the boats.  There’s no way you can be missed at our show!  It’s a great place to sell-off 2010 product, showcase new 2011 product – or book services for the fall.

Show costs are extremely affordable.  Dock space begins at $300 for boats up to 25' to $600 for docks that and can easily accommodate boats up to 50’.   There is room on the hard for bulk boat displays beginning at 1,000 feet for $2.00 per square foot.  Local motels and eateries are close at hand, or exhibitors can stay on the boat.  The Port Credit Harbour Marina is a full-service marina with full changing facilities.  And there are numerous other show support services including free parking, tables and chairs, canopies and installation included, hydro and internet access available on request.

We are planning an extensive advertising and promotion campaign in marine and local non-marine media beginning early May, 2010. This will encompass TV, radio, print and internet advertising. Our internet reach will include social media tools such as Facebook; Twitter; free calendar sites (Kijji) and our very own Port Credit Boat Show blog – where we will highlight all of our exhibitors and show features.

But don’t take our word for how valuable the show is to your business.  Listen to what exhibitors from last year’s show said...
“This is a great show,” said Shawn Bannon sales representative for Navy Point Marine, dealers for Jeanneau and Island Packet.  “We sold two boats, one used, and one new.  This is a show of qualified buyers.  You always sell a boat at this show!”
"We can credit selling two boats from this show" stated Ryan Wheeler, sales manager for Skyline Marina. "And we've made some great contacts and have great leads we can follow up on."
First time exhibitor Ken Harrison representing four product line including Furuno stated, “I was astounded at the calibre of people who attend this show. I’ve had great questions, and lots of emails through-out the show asking for more information.”

April Show Update

Four months until show time and things are starting to take shape.

We are pleased to announce that our media partners have tossed their hat in the ring with both electronic and print advertising.  In fact, to celebrate our 20th anniversary they have stepped up their commitment to us with additional advertising space.  Boat Guide, Boats and Places, Canadian Yachting and GAM on Yachting will once again be at the show.

You can expect more food vendors this year.  In addition to ‘Hanks Franks’ and their delicious peameal bacon sandwiches/franks and burgers, Gino’s Pizza of Port Credit will be joining us.

A favourite for the kids - Tuggy the Tugboat (sponsored by the Ontario Marine Operators Association) will be on the hard, spreading safety messages.  If you and your family haven’t yet met Tuggy, he’s a mobile Tugboat that talks to all of the children.  He’s especially attracted to kids wearing PFDs!  Launch is a good time to make sure that you have enough PFDs.  And if you are looking for a good selection, check out our sponsor The Store – Mason’s Chandlery.  For your convenience they are open 7 days a week until July 31st.

Deadline to confirm exhibitor space for the 20th anniversary Port Credit Boat Show is May 1st.  If you were an exhibitor last year and did not receive your exhibitor package, please email us at pcboatshow@thestoremasons.com.

Early Boat Show Days

The exhibitor information packages for this year's show went out this week. May seem kind of early since most boats aren't even in the water, but we are trying to give exhibitors time to book and pay for space before the HST comes into effect.  If you haven't received your exhibitor's package by March 15th, or would just like one send us an email.

The Speaker's Tent, sponsored by informedboater.com is coming together nicely.  Rob MacLeod will be returning to talk about cruising electronics.  He and his wife Mary have spent this winter cruising the Caribbean, and Rob has a lot of new insights into 'can't live without' cruising equipment when venturing out on a long haul.  I'm also hoping that Mary will join Rob to talk about what it's 'really' like taking a cruise for several months.

Wally Moran is also returning this year.  When he's not down south, you can always catch up with him on his website  thesailingchannel.tv.  He will speak all three days and will cover a different part of his trip (Toronto > ICW > Bahamas) each day. That should be fun. Seasoned cruisers can also ask Wally about Cuba, a place he's visited often.

Unfortunately Paul and Sheryl Shard won't be joining us this year.  They are filming season seven of their television show Distant Shores.  They will be cruising the Baltic Sea all summer.  I suppose if I had to choose between Port Credit and the Baltic Sea well.. They are commissioning their new Southerly 49 this month!
